How to plan a surprise proposal in Punta Cana

A proposal on a Caribbean beach sounds simple: walk, kneel, ask. But a few small decisions make the difference between a blurry phone video and photos you'll keep forever. Here's how I plan them with my clients.

1. Talk to your photographer before the trip

Message me with your dates, your resort and any ideas — from a phone or email your partner won't see.

2. Choose the spot

Good proposal spots have three things: privacy, good light and an easy excuse to be there.

• Your resort beach at sunset — the easiest excuse ("let's watch the sunset").
• A quiet corner of the resort — a garden, a pier, a terrace.
• Macao or Juanillo — more spectacular, but you need a reason to go ("I booked us a beach dinner / a ride").

Make sure you know exactly where to stop. It sounds obvious, but nerves are real.

3. Time it with the light

The best light is in the hour before sunset. I suggest proposing around 30–40 minutes before sunset, which leaves time for a mini session afterward in the golden light.

4. The cover story

Your partner will probably want to dress up if they know you're going to dinner. That's the perfect cover. Avoid saying "photos" — say "dinner", "sunset drinks" or "a walk".

5. On the day

• Your photographer should be in place before you arrive, and out of sight.
• Agree beforehand on how you'll let each other know you're on your way.
• Walk to the spot. Take a breath. Kneel.
• The whole sequence gets photographed: the walk, the knee, the reaction, the hug, the ring.

6. After the yes

Once the surprise is over, I introduce myself and we continue with a relaxed couple session while the emotion is still there. These are often the best photos of the whole trip.

7. Have a plan B

Crowds, rain, a sudden change of plans — it happens. Think about a backup spot and time before the day.

Extras

Flowers, a sign or a private dinner can make it even more special. Many resorts offer these, so ask your resort too.
