What to wear for family photos in Punta Cana
Simple color palettes, fabrics and outfit tips so your family looks good together on the beach — without matching t-shirts.
The number one question families ask me before a session is what to wear. The good news: it's easier than it looks. You don't need matching outfits. You need a palette.
Start with 3 or 4 colors
Pick a small group of colors that sit well together and let everyone wear a mix of them. Some palettes that always work on the beach in Punta Cana:
- Classic beach: white, cream, sand, soft blue
- Warm and earthy: cream, terracotta, olive, tan
- Soft pastel: white, blush, sage, light blue
One person can wear a pattern; everyone else in solids. That keeps the photo calm.
Things to avoid
- Big logos and text. They pull the eye away from faces.
- Neon colors. They reflect on skin and look harsh next to the sea.
- All black. It's hot, and it loses detail in bright sun.
- Identical white t-shirts and jeans. It's a classic, but it tends to look stiff.
Fabrics that move
Linen, cotton and light dresses look best. The breeze moves them and adds life to the photo. Avoid stiff or very tight clothes, especially for kids.
Kids: comfort first
A child in comfortable clothes plays, runs and laughs. A child in itchy clothes sulks. Choose outfits they can sit in the sand with, and bring a spare outfit — the sea always wins.
Shoes
Most of the session is barefoot on the sand. Bring sandals to walk to the spot.
Grandparents and big groups
For multi-generation families, I like each family unit to have a slightly different shade within the same palette. It helps each family stand out in the big group photo and still looks coordinated.
A quick checklist
- Choose 3–4 colors
- Mostly solids, one pattern max
- Light, flowing fabrics
- Spare clothes for kids
- Sandals, sunscreen, water
